Asbestos is still a great danger to public health and if inhaled can cause lung disease. The points below are general guidelines on what to do if you notice asbestos has been dumped in public and is exposed to people in close proximity. Irrespective of the dangers to people, there are still incidents where people have dumped asbestos materials in public. This is a criminal act and if you know of anybody doing such dangerous practices, then please contact the Health and Safety Executive for further advice.

Always remember to only carry out this work if you are properly trained and have the correct equipment for asbestos removal. You should ideally contact asbestos removal company ARK Environmental, based in the West Midlands of the UK.

The main points if seeing asbestos fly-tipped in public:-

Asbestos fibres can kill if humans are placed in contact with the hidden killer.

Keep exposure to asbestos fibres at a minimum by following all the controls in this sheet.

Restrict access - minimise the number of people present.

Use tape and notices to warn others.

Equipment Needed:-

- 1000-gauge polythene sheeting and duct tape;

- Water sprayers containing wetting agent, eg diluted washing-up liquid;

- Water container such as a bucket and rags;

- Asbestos waste container e.g. labelled polythene sack;

For Personal protective equipment (PPE)

Provide:

- Disposable asbestos-protective overalls with a hood;

- Wellington-type boots without laces (laced boots are hard to decontaminate);

- Respiratory protective equipment.

The Asbestos Removal Procedure:

- Immediately notify the relevant authority e.g. Local authority, the HCE, ARK Environmental.

- Estimate the amount and type of asbestos waste.

- If the waste is spread around or mixed with non-asbestos material, get an HSE-licensed contractor to deal with it.

- Disposal - see sheet em9.

- Small amount of any asbestos-containing waste

- Dampen and place pieces in an asbestos waste container.

- Shovel damp residues into the container.

What To Do With Large Amounts of Asbestos-containing Waste:-

- Cover the waste securely with 1000-gauge polythene sheet. Peg it down with tent pegs. -- Attach asbestos warning stickers.

- Mark out an exclusion zone with warning tape.

- If the waste is in an inhabited area, make arrangements to secure the site until it is removed.

What's Required In Asbestos Cleaning and Disposal:

- Clean the equipment with damp rags.

- Put used rags and other waste in the asbestos waste container and tape it closed.

- Put the asbestos waste container in a clear polythene sack and tape it closed.

- Don’t sweep up dust or debris use a Class H vacuum cleaner or damp rags.

- Don’t take used overalls home.

- Don’t re-use disposable PPE.

- Don’t smoke.

- Don’t eat or drink in the work area.

What are the diseases caused by asbestos?

Asbestos removal specialists ARK Environmental are dedicated to removing the hidden killer that is asbestos, the dangerous substance that although has been banned since the year 2000, is still in foundations of buildings construction prior to that year. Below is a brief article on the various fatal diseases caused by asbestos, of which West Midlands based ARK are experienced consultants in the construction industry.

As early as 1898 the Chief Inspector of Factories of the United Kingdom reported to Parliament in his Annual Report about the "evil effects of asbestos dust". He reported the "sharp, glass like nature of the particles" when allowed to remain in the air in any quantity, "have been found to be injurious, as might have been expected".

In 1906 a British Parliamentary Commission confirmed the first cases of asbestos deaths in factories in Britain and recommended better ventilation and other safety measures. In 1918 a US insurance company produced a study showing premature deaths in the asbestos industry in the United States. In 1926 the Massachusetts Industrial Accidents Board processed the first successful compensation claim by a sick asbestos worker. Many American injuries from asbestos exposure came from shipbuilders working during World War II.

Such fatal diseases caused by asbestos include:
Asbestosis – A lung disease first found in naval shipyard workers, asbestosis is a scarring of the lung tissue from an acid produced by the body's attempt to dissolve the fibers. [8] The scarring may eventually become so severe that the lungs can no longer function. The latency period (the time it takes for the disease to develop) is often 10-20 years.

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelial lining of the lungs and the chest cavity, the peritoneum or the pericardium (a sac surrounding the heart). It is believed that mesothelioma is caused by generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by the asbestos fibers. There is also some evidence to suggest that simian virus 40 (SV40) works together with asbestos in the development of malignant mesothelioma.

Asbestos exposure is linked to at least 50% of patients developing malignant mesothelioma. Malignant mesothelioma has a peak incidence 35-45 years after asbestos exposure. Median survival for patients with malignant mesothelioma is 11 months. Asbestos has a synergistic effect with tobacco smoking in the causation of pleural mesothelioma.

The name is derived from its historical use in lamp wicks; the resistance of asbestos to fire has long been exploited for a variety of purposes. Asbestos was used in fabrics such as Egyptian burial cloths and Charlemagne’s tablecloth (which according to legend, he threw in a fire to clean). Asbestos occurs naturally in many forms (see below); it is mined from metamorphic rocks.

When asbestos is used for its resistance to fire or heat, the fibres are often mixed with cement or woven into fabric or mats. Asbestos has historically been used in brake shoes and gaskets for its heat resistance. It was also used on electric ovens and hotplate wiring utilising another of its benefits; electrical insulation at elevated temperature, and in buildings for its flame-retardant and insulating properties, tensile strength, flexibility, and resistance to chemicals.
